NFL Play 60

NFL, football, Play 60, Let's Move
The NFL has created this movement to encourage children to be more active. This will hopefully fight the tide of increasing childhood obesity. They're using the power of celebrity to encourage kids to be more active. This is a great effort and I hope it helps gets kids to move more.

I applaud their efforts, but wish they went beyond children. I mainly wish they were pushing their fitness on their head coaches. I would rather see the outcome of a weight-loss challenge between Andy Reid and Rex Ryan than watch their teams play.

Andy Reid, NFL, Eagles, football
Rex Ryan, NFL, Jets, football

I think if they pushed their head coaches to be healthier, it would encourage their adult fans to be healthier, too. They could set up online activity challenges and pit fans of one team against fans of other teams. Ask people to do sit-ups and push-ups while watching the commercials. This keeps people in front of the TV, which makes advertisers happy, but may help the health of viewers. They could offer tickets to games for fans who log the most time being active during the season. This is just a small sample of the way the NFL could use their power to encourage people to be more active.

They could offer tips to help their fans look more like Clay Matthews:

or Hope Solo:

Yes, I'm aware that's not the same football game, but wanted an athlete and she does play football.

Day 16D--Catch Up

Thanksgiving set me back a bit, but not too far. Even with the football game causing the meal to be delayed for three hours of snacking, I didn't go overboard too far. Now that most of the leftovers are gone or frozen, I can get back to eating healthful food without guilt about the food that could go bad.

I weighed the same this morning as I did last Tuesday morning. I am trying to catch back up on the missed workouts in the EA Active 6-week Challenge and should be able to do that tomorrow. My core continues to strengthen and I think my legs are, too. It's harder to tell about my legs from the charts because I'm doing squats and lunges on the Wii, so they're not fresh when I do the wall sit. My quantity of lunges has also gone down, but the quality has improved. My back leg is going all the way to the ground. I can't do a larger lunge than I did today. I am trying to hold off on measurements until the middle of the month so it will be a full month since the last time I measured. If I measure too often, the lack of change is a little depressing and counters the feeling that I have that everything seems more toned and muscular.

Day 44--Holiday Hangover

Today should be a National Holiday. We should just move Presidents' Day to the first Monday after the first Sunday of February. That would be the day after the Super Bowl so we can all eat & drink all we want, stay at our friends' houses after the game is over, have time to clean up and then not have to worry about getting up early the next morning to get to work. One million people watched the game last night and I'm sure they'd all agree with me on this. Especially since most of us don't really celebrate Presidents' Day anyway.

Other than that, today is a day to celebrate only gaining .2 pounds from the gluttony that is Super Bowl Sunday. I probably could be celebrating no change in my weight, but I didn't feel like making the effort of peeing before my weigh in. My cat, on the other hand, could do with a kitty treadmill. I used the Wii to weigh her in, and she's pushing 20 pounds. For now, I'm rationalizing it as that she's part Maine Coon. (It's sort of the cat equivalent of being big boned."

Day 43---Super Bowl

The head count for our party today is hovering around a dozen, so this weekend has involved a lot of prep work. (Kept typing prep as perp. That's not what I was doing today.) Even with all the prep work of cleaning, cooking, rearranging furniture to fit everyone with a decent view of the TV and fending off the puppies, I still managed to get my EA Active work-out in today. My weight is still right at 132 pounds, where it feels like it's stuck. I'm waiting for the point in this 30 day challenge when the upper body exercises with the 5 pound weights don't make me want to cry. I'm not anywhere near that point yet. I am weirdly at a point where I look forward to the running, though. I need to take that unexpected enjoyment of running and try the Wii Fit running, which I've never done. All of that exercise, plus the exercise of scrubbing the kitchen floors should give me enough of a calorie burn to off-set all the crap I'm prepared to eat and drink the rest of the day. Now, on to the game. Go Saints!!!
